Minority lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives staged a dramatic walkout in protest against the passage of key provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025. The controversy surrounds Clause 60(3), which allows for both electronic and manual transmission of election results, and Clause 84, which deals with candidate nomination methods by political parties.
The minority argued that allowing manual transmission could lead to election result manipulation, while the majority maintained that the provision was necessary for flexibility. Rep. Bamidele Salam moved to delete the manual transmission clause, but the motion was defeated in a voice vote ยน ยฒ ยณ.
Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda expressed concerns that the provisions could undermine electoral integrity and transparency. The minority caucus also opposed Clause 84, arguing that it interferes with internal party affairs.
The amendments have sparked intense political debate, highlighting deep partisan divisions within the House. The minority vows to continue mobilizing public opinion against the provisions.
