Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma State, saying the Tinubu administration remains committed to the proposal.
Speaking Wednesday at the APC South-South zonal congress in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio said Warri would serve as the capital of the โnew Deltaโ if Anioma is carved out, pointing to its airport, seaport, government offices, major oil companies and stadium as ready infrastructure. The event drew governors of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River, plus other party leaders and stakeholders.
Akpabio described the push as historically justified, rooted in equity, administrative efficiency and balanced development, and noted that the 10th Senate is prioritising the bill, which would split Delta into two viable states to boost decentralisation and growth.
โAnioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,โ Akpabio said. โWith Asaba as Aniomaโs capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.โ He also urged South-South unity and support for the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The drive gained momentum in November 2025 when Senator Ned Nwoko said constitutional amendment committees and the Presidency were backing it, with 97 senators reportedly endorsing the move.
