Barcelona — Nigeria international Ademola Lookman featured for 60 minutes as Atlético Madrid earned a rare 2-0 victory away at Barcelona’s Camp Nou in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
The result marked Diego Simeone’s first win at Barça’s iconic home since taking over at Atlético. Goals from Julián Álvarez and substitute Alexander Sørloth, who replaced Lookman, sealed the win for Los Rojiblancos.
Lookman hailed the team’s collective display and defensive discipline.
“It was a good result, the performance of the team — especially not to concede here. It shows the work everyone’s been doing and the togetherness,” he said.
Lookman pointed to key moments that swung the tie, particularly Pau Cubarsí’s red card just before half-time. Atlético made the man advantage count immediately, with Álvarez curling home the resulting free-kick.
“Scoring right after they had a man sent off was key. Brilliant free-kick from Julián and the timing of Alex’s goal in the second half was also good,” Lookman added.
Despite the first-leg advantage, he stressed the tie is far from decided ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg.
“They’re a top team, of course. They put you in difficult moments but we dug in together. It’s going to be a massive challenge, massive game. We know that. Calm heads, for sure. We’ll take each game as it comes.”
The former African Footballer of the Year also said he’s enjoying life at the Madrid club since his winter move from Atalanta. “It has been nice, it has been great actually. Long may it continue.”
In 15 appearances across all competitions for Atlético Madrid, Lookman has five goals and four assist
