Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, hours after leaving the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
The two political heavyweights made the announcement on Sunday at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, where they were received by the partyโs National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.
Both men said the move was aimed at fostering national unity, empowering young people, and ending the cycle of internal political crises that have weakened Nigeriaโs development.
Kwankwaso praised the NDC leadership for its vision and commitment to national progress. โI sincerely appreciate you for taking the time to explain so many things about this party. I also congratulate you on your commitment to this country and the quality of leadership you represent,โ he said.
He explained that the visit was to understand the partyโs ideology, blueprint, and core values, and that the discussions revealed alignment on key issues such as education reform, youth development, and womenโs empowerment.
Kwankwaso stressed that political parties should go beyond being vehicles for power. โPlatforms must also serve as instruments for social development and inclusion,โ he said, while calling on Nigerians interested in contesting elections to register and participate in party processes.
โWe agreed to remain committed to the ideals of peace, unity and progress for our country,โ he added.
On his part, Obi said Nigeria could no longer afford political distractions amid deepening socio-economic challenges. โIt is unacceptable that more than 50 per cent of our population is not actively engaged in productive activities. That must change if Nigeria is to realise its full potential,โ he declared.
He lamented that persistent internal conflicts and litigations within political parties were pushing many politicians to seek new platforms. Obi urged stakeholders to put aside infighting and focus on nation-building. โNigeria is going through difficult times. We cannot afford to keep fighting ourselves. Our priority must be the Nigerian people,โ he said.
The former Anambra governor also emphasized the need for a Nigeria where citizens feel safe, children have access to quality education, and families are free from poverty and hunger. โWe must redirect our energy to confront poverty, insecurity and economic hardship. This journey must succeed,โ he added.
Welcoming the new members, Senator Dickson described the NDC as an ideological platform built on progress, inclusiveness, and integrity.
NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, called the development a turning point, saying the partyโs growing movement is driven by a shared mission to โrescue Nigeria.โ He thanked supporters at home and abroad for their commitment and urged continued focus on unity and national development.
The event drew party leaders, National Assembly members, and supporters from across the country, signaling the NDCโs push to broaden its political base and national relevance ahead of future elections.
