The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) is pushing for a significant increase in female representation in the Nigerian Police Force, calling on the National Assembly to raise the proposed women’s recruitment quota from 15% to 30% in the Nigeria Police Act (Amendment) Bill.
Current State:
- Women constitute less than 11% of the Nigeria Police Force
- Proposed quota is 15%, but CISLAC recommends 30% to meet international benchmarks
Recommendations:
- Phase out analogue record-keeping and establish a digital record system
- Create a Gender and Inclusion Compliance Directorate
- Implement compulsory gender-responsive budgeting and annual audits
- Remove discriminatory criteria, marital and pregnancy restrictions
CISLAC emphasizes that modern policing requires a digitized and gender-responsive system to enhance professionalism, public trust, and the ability to prevent and prosecute crimes. The organization reaffirms its commitment to supporting the National Assembly in developing a more inclusive and transparent Police Force
