Abuja — Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has urged journalists to uphold truth and professionalism, saying national stability depends on responsible reporting as much as military action.

Represented at the NUJ FCT Council’s Easter retreat, Oluyede said the Armed Forces remain steadfast despite persistent threats and expressed confidence that Nigeria will overcome its security challenges.

He linked Easter’s message of resurrection to hope and renewal, adding that trials are not permanent when faith and unity prevail.

Reaffirming the military’s commitment against terrorism, insurgency and banditry, he said troops’ sacrifices have restored normalcy in many communities.

Oluyede warned that security is also fought in the information domain, urging accuracy and restraint to avoid reports that incite fear or division.

He called for public cooperation with security agencies, paid tribute to fallen soldiers and asked for prayers for troops in the field.

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru said ethical journalism promotes transparency, combats corruption and strengthens institutions, adding that an informed citizenry is vital to nation-building.

He noted that responsible reporting fosters unity, curbs misinformation and gives voice to the vulnerable.

NUJ FCT Chair Grace Ike urged journalists to renew their commitment to truth, integrity and excellence, despite deadline pressures and risks.

“Operating in the FCT places a unique responsibility on us. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” she said.

She stressed unity within the union as critical to advancing journalism and protecting press freedom.

The retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” gathered journalists, security officials and stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility and the media’s role in national development.
