FIFA has taken disciplinary action against the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the DR Congo Football Association (Fecofa) following incidents during their 2026 World Cup continental play-off match in November 2025.
The NFF has been fined 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,270; ยฃ950) for failing to ensure order and security, specifically due to spectators throwing objects during the game, breaching Article 17.2.b and Article 17 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The DR Congo FA received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs for supporters using laser pointers or similar electronic devices, violating Article 17.2.d.
The BBC has reached out to both NFF and Fecofa for comment but is yet to receive a response.
Nigeria is awaiting FIFA’s verdict on its protest over the eligibility of several DR Congo players, citing domestic laws that don’t recognize dual citizenship for adults.
DR Congo has been included in the upcoming intercontinental World Cup play-offs, facing the winner of New Caledonia vs Jamaica on March 31.
Leopards head coach Sebastien Desabre has named a 26-man squad, with Yoane Wissa returning after missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
DR Congo aims to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when they competed as Zaire. Up to 10 African nations could qualify for the expanded global tournament in North America.
