Abuja — Troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully thwarted a coordinated terrorist attack on a military formation in Benisheikh, Borno State, in the early hours of Thursday.

Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, said in a statement that the insurgents targeted the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade at about 12:30 a.m. but failed to breach the perimeter.

According to Onoja, the attackers were met with “exceptional courage, professionalism and superior firepower” from troops led by Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Oseni Braimah. A swift counter-offensive forced the terrorists to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission.

“The insurgents were decisively engaged and compelled to withdraw, leaving behind evidence of their failed assault,” Onoja said.

He described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist elements facing sustained military pressure and heavy losses in recent operations. “This futile offensive against a well-defended position reflects their dwindling capacity,” he added.

While the assault was repelled, Onoja confirmed that some soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty. Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede paid tribute to the fallen troops, calling their sacrifice a lasting source of pride and inspiration for the Armed Forces and the nation. The military high command also extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

Onoja urged the public and media to await official notification of next of kin before sharing further details and cautioned against spreading unverified reports that could undermine ongoing operations.

Clearance and exploitation operations are currently underway in the area to track and neutralise fleeing insurgents.

Reaffirming the military’s resolve, Onoja said the Armed Forces, working with other security agencies, remain committed to restoring lasting peace in the North-East and across Nigeria. He appealed to citizens to stay calm, vigilant, and continue providing credible information to support security efforts.
