Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been asked to step down by President Bola Tinubu, sources within the Presidency confirm. The decision was made during a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, with preparations underway for a formal handover ceremony.
Egbetokun, appointed as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, was initially due for retirement on September 4, 2024, but the National Assembly amended the Police Act to allow him serve a four-year term. His tenure was marked by controversies, including allegations of human rights abuses and criticism over his extended stay in office
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, is expected to take over as the new IGP, pending formal announcement and Senate confirmation.
