The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, is calling for an end to violence, harassment, and intimidation against journalists in Nigeria. She emphasized that such actions undermine press freedom and the public’s right to information.
Speaking on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Ike highlighted the increasing threats journalists face, including physical assault, arbitrary detention, online harassment, and gender-based discrimination. The NUJ FCT Council has zero tolerance for these actions and demands accountability from perpetrators.
Ike condemned excessive force by state actors and security agencies, describing it as attempts to silence the media. She reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to protecting journalists, particularly female reporters, through advocacy and institutional action.
“Journalists are watchdogs of society,” she said, adding that a free and safe press environment fosters transparency and good governance. The NUJ FCT remains proactive in advocating for journalist safety and seeking justice for those attacked in the line of duty
