Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has begun serving a 5-year prison sentence for conspiring to raise campaign funds from Libya’s late dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, 70, arrived at La SantΓ© prison in Paris on October 21, 2025, marking a stunning downfall for the man who led France between 2007 and 2012 .
The Conviction
Sarkozy was convicted of participating in a criminal organization related to alleged campaign finances from Libya. Although he was acquitted of personally receiving or using the funds, the court found him guilty of conspiring with close aides to orchestrate the scheme .
Imprisonment
Sarkozy will be held in a special unit for inmates requiring extra protection at La SantΓ© prison. He may be placed in an isolated area and will undergo the same procedures as all new inmates, including fingerprinting, photography, and a strip search. His cell will be equipped with basic amenities like a shower, refrigerator, and television .
Sarkozy’s Response
Despite his conviction, Sarkozy remains defiant, claiming innocence and denouncing the judicial process as a “scandal.” He plans to write a book about his prison experience and has packed clothes, family photos, and three books, including Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo,” for his time in prison.
What’s Next?
Sarkozy’s lawyers have filed a request for early release, pending his appeals trial. If granted, he could be freed by Christmas. As he serves his sentence, Sarkozy’s legacy and future plans remain uncertain
