The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12 a public holiday to mark Democracy Day in Nigeria.
Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on behalf of the FG. A statement signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani said June 12 remains a landmark date in the countryโs history, honoring the courage and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic rule.
โTheir legacy continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,โ the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed governmentโs commitment to core democratic principles: rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He added that the administration will uphold these ideals โwithout compromise.โ
On security, the Minister said the Ministry of Interior will work with security agencies to strengthen measures and protect lives and property nationwide. โA secure and stable environment is essential for democracy and national development,โ he noted.
He also urged Nigerians to use the holiday for reflection. Citizens were called to recommit to lawful behavior, responsible civic engagement, and national unity.
โAs we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies in the character of its citizens,โ Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.
