Newcastle United have fired the first shot in what’s shaping up to be a major transfer tug-of-war, submitting a formal €24m offer for AIK’s 18-year-old winger Zadok Yohanna.
Dubbed the ‘Nigerian Neymar’ for his explosive dribbling and pace, Yohanna has exploded onto the European scene with AIK. The Magpies, under Eddie Howe, have made the left-footed right winger their top attacking target this summer as they look to rebuild after finishing 12th and missing Europe last season.
Record-breaking fee on the table
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg and Swedish outlet Expressen, Newcastle’s €24m bid would make Yohanna the most expensive sale in Allsvenskan history. It’s a statement of intent from the Tyneside club as they try to outmuscle rivals for one of Europe’s hottest teenage prospects.
Brighton, Madrid & Dortmund circling
Newcastle aren’t alone. Brighton have reportedly already agreed terms with the player, but Newcastle are banking on their financial power and Howe’s development track record to hijack the move. Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and Rennes are also monitoring the teenager closely.
The numbers behind the hype
Scouts rave about Yohanna’s “blistering pace and dribbling skills.” As an inverted winger he cuts inside onto his stronger left foot to shoot or create — exactly the profile Howe wants. This season he’s already delivered 5 goals and 4 assists in just 12 appearances across all competitions, with only 10 league games played.
His rise even earned him a Nigeria call-up for the Unity Cup in London, though AIK blocked it so he could focus on rehab and club duties ahead of a potential big-money move.
Potential Gordon replacement
If the deal gets over the line, Yohanna could directly replace Anthony Gordon, who left for Barcelona this summer. For a Newcastle side starved of attacking spark, the 18-year-old represents both immediate impact and long-term upside.
With Europe’s elite watching, the race for the ‘Nigerian Neymar’ is only just getting started
