Florentino Pérez just dropped a campaign bombshell. On Wednesday night the Real Madrid president took to X to post a cryptic video announcing José Mourinho as the club’s next manager — with one big condition: Pérez has to win re-election first.
The June 7 vote will see Pérez go head-to-head with challenger Enrique Riquelme for control of the 15-time Champions League winners. Pérez timed the post perfectly, releasing it while Riquelme was live on Spain’s El Hormiguero TV show.
“MOUcha historia para hacer”
Pérez’s caption played on Mourinho’s “Mou” nickname. In Spanish it reads as “a lot of history to be made” — a clear promise of a blockbuster return if voters back him.
The video opens with “While on the television they talk and talk and talk…” before cutting to Mourinho in a white Madrid shirt giving a simple “Sí” to camera. Spanish media have taken it as Pérez confirming he’ll rehire the coach he first brought to the Bernabéu in 2010.
Déjà vu vs Barcelona
Back then, Mourinho’s mission was to break Pep Guardiola’s Messi-led Barça dynasty. He didn’t win the Champions League, but did deliver La Liga with a record 100 points and sent Guardiola into sabbatical.
History is repeating. Barça are dominant again under Hansi Flick, with 17-year-old Lamine Yamal lighting up the Camp Nou like a new La Masia genius. Pérez is betting that a Mourinho, even one “past his best,” can outfox Flick’s high line and bring defensive bite back to Madrid.
Election battle intensifies
Riquelme isn’t holding back either. He’s promising to sign Manchester City’s Rodri if he wins. Meanwhile Pérez says he’ll unveil Madrid’s first major signing on Thursday.
So the message is clear: vote Pérez, get Mourinho. Vote Riquelme, get Rodri.
With El Clásico bragging rights and Madrid’s future on the line, June 7 just became the biggest match of the season — and it’s not even on the pitch
