The Nigerian football team, Super Eagles, has left out several high-profile players, including goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and forward Terem Moffi, from their final 28-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to reports, Okoye’s exclusion was due to his insistence on being guaranteed the starting role, which was rejected by coach Eric Chelle. The Udinese goalkeeper was expected to compete with Stanley Nwabali for the top spot, but his absence from the list released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sparked surprise.
Moffi’s omission was attributed to concerns over his mental readiness, following recent incidents involving supporters of his French club. Chelle believes the striker needs time to stabilize his situation, especially after expressing his desire to leave the club.
Tolu Arokodare was also left out due to limited playing time and unimpressive performances, while Uche Chrisantus failed to impress during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa. The Super Eagles are set to begin final preparations for AFCON, with Chelle looking to assemble a committed and competitive squad.
