Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died at 68, according to Sanatorio Centro in Rosario, Argentina, where he was being treated.
Dr. Carlos Mackey, the hospitalโs medical director, confirmed that Jorge Messi passed away in the early hours of Saturday. He said no further details about the cause of death would be shared out of respect for the familyโs privacy.
Tributes from clubs and football bodies
Newellโs Old Boys, the Rosario club where Lionel began his youth career, confirmed the news and paid tribute online.
โRenowned Newellโs supporter, businessman and father of national team captain Lionel Andrรฉs Messi. Alongside his wife Celia Cuccittini, Jorge was the support who guided with vision, discipline and love the career of the greatest player of all time,โ the club posted on X.
โHis steady presence and guidance behind the scenes were key to supporting Lionel every step of the way, from his early days in Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football. Thank you for teaching him to love these colors.โ
The Argentine Football Association said it was โsaddened and regretfulโ over the loss.
โTo the entire family in this difficult moment, we send our warmest and most sincere embrace,โ the AFA wrote.
The Argentina national team shared a graphic reading โFuerza Leoโ with the message: โWe are with you in this difficult moment. Our most heartfelt hug.โ
CONMEBOL, UNICEF โ where Lionel serves as a goodwill ambassador โ and the Royal Spanish Football Federation also sent condolences. UNICEF described Jorge as โsomeone always committed to the rights of children and a supporter of UNICEF.โ
A central figure in Lionelโs career
Jorge Messi was central to every major stage of his sonโs career. He was alongside him through Barcelonaโs golden era and the difficult exit, the moves to PSG and Inter Miami, and more than 20 years with the Argentina national team, including World Cup triumphs and setbacks.
Photos of the two celebrating after Argentinaโs 2022 World Cup final win over France became one of the defining images of Lionelโs career.
Weeks ago during the 2026 World Cup, the family had said Jorge was under medical care and โrecovering and progressing favorably.โ It is not yet clear if his death was linked to that illness.
Jorge Messi is survived by his wife Celia and their four children, including Lionel.
