Michael Owen has urged Manchester United to stand by Michael Carrick despite growing speculation that Antonio Conte is being lined up to take over at Old Trafford.
Carrick, 45, is under severe pressure just months after being handed the permanent job following his caretaker stint. United have endured a poor start to the campaign โ without a single clean sheet against domestic opposition, eliminated from the Carabao Cup, and with only one Premier League victory to their name so far.
Reports from The Athletic last month suggested there is unease inside the club over a lack of intensity from the players, particularly in terms of work rate and defensive structure.
That poor form has fuelled rumours of a change. Italian outlets Calciomercato and TuttoMercatoWeb claimed on Monday that United are actively considering dismissing Carrick and that Conte is edging closer to an agreement with the Red Devils.
The speculation intensified after Conte, 57, stated during the international break that he wants to return to management with a historic club that is currently struggling. Fabrizio Romano has since indicated that the former Chelsea and Tottenham boss is ready to come back immediately, with United specifically mentioned.
Despite the noise, former Manchester United striker Owen believes Carrick should be given more time.
Speaking to Goal, the 2001 Ballon dโOr winner said Unitedโs upcoming schedule is brutal, starting with a hostile trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United.
โI was looking at the next fixtures for United and theyโre really tough. A lot of away games. The next one in the league is Leeds, and Leeds are flying. We know what that rivalry means. The atmosphere will be intense. They will sense an opportunity,โ Owen said.
โIโm a huge Carrick fan. I felt he deserved the job. I get that there is always pressure at United, but after what he did last season, he should be given time.โ
Owen also argued United have been unfortunate with results, pointing to Evertonโs stunning late equaliser and a controversial VAR call in the Manchester derby that cost them points.
โThey were incredibly unlucky against Everton, conceding a wonder-goal with virtually the last kick. They were also hard done by with VAR against City. With a bit more luck they would have several more points,โ he added.
โOkay, the performance against Spurs wasnโt good enough, but I like this team. Itโs much improved compared to the last few years and it has the potential to have a solid season. There are people trying to pile on the pressure, but he deserves much more time for what he has done.โ
Carrickโs immediate focus is Tuesday nightโs Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeoneโs side arrive in fine form, having won their last four La Liga games, including a victory over Real Madrid, scoring 11 goals and conceding just two in that run.
