The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has carried out a massive raid on a notorious internet fraud enclave in Ghana, seizing about $17 billion and arresting hundreds of suspected fraudsters.
FBI Director, Kash Patel, announced the details of the operation on Sunday.
The exercise, code-named Operation Blackout, was part of ongoing efforts by the U.S. agency to combat global scam centre fraud, Patel said in a post on social media.
He described the mission in Ghana as another major success in the FBIโs worldwide crackdown on cyber fraud.
โThis FBI’s global crackdown on scam center fraud continues to deliver outstanding results in Ghana,โ Patel stated.
He disclosed that approximately $17 billion was recovered during the raid, with hundreds of alleged scammers apprehended.
According to the FBI chief, thousands of trafficked victims forced to work in the fraud centres were also rescued, while an estimated $670 million in potential losses to victims was prevented.
Corroborating the development, Ghanaโs Minister of Communications, Sam George, said the operation was jointly executed by the FBI and Ghanaian security agencies.
He said the coordinated sting operations, which took place between September 25 and 28, 2026, dealt a decisive blow to cybercriminal networks operating in the country.
