Nigeria will take on host nation Morocco in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, with a place in the final at stake for the winner. Find out all you need to know about the fixture, including the head-to-head record and how to watch live.
Two of the most in-form teams at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, Nigeria and Morocco, meet in the semi-finals on Wednesday (14 January) in Rabat, with a place in Sunday’s final at stake. Both teams have taken teams apart with relative ease on their way to the last four, but this promises to be the toughest test either has faced so far.
Nigeria Form and Team News
The Super Eagles enter the game as the team to beat, boasting an unblemished record of five wins from five matches. With 14 goals, they are also the tournament’s top scorers; and with two games still to play, they sit just two goals short of the single-tournament record of 16, set by Cรดte d’Ivoire in 2008. Much of that has been thanks to the contribution of star forwards Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, who have combined to score two-thirds of Nigeria’s total goal tally.
The Super Eagles are aiming for their ninth AFCON final overall, and only their second consecutive appearance in the final in the nation’s history. However, they will have to do so without captain Wilfred Ndidi, who will miss the game through suspension, having picked up a second yellow card in the quarter-final victory over Algeria.
Morocco Form and Team News
Hosts Morocco arrive in the semi-finals having won four of their five games. Walid Regragui’s side has relied heavily on Brahim Diaz for goals. The Real Madrid forward has scored in five consecutive matches, with his five goals accounting for more than half of the Atlas Lions’ tournament total of nine.
Morocco have truly excelled in defence, conceding just one goal and boasting the competition’s best defensive record. This semi-final marks Morocco’s first appearance at this stage in 22 years. They will now aim to reach the final for only the third time in their history, after winning the tournament in 1976 and finishing runners-up to Tunisia in 2004. Azzedine Ounahi will miss the game, with the Girona midfielder sidelined due to a persistent calf injury.
Nigeria vs Morocco Head to Head
This will be the sixth time the sides face each other at the Africa Cup of Nations, and the first in 22 years, with their last meeting coming in the group stage of AFCON 2004, where Morocco triumphed 1-0 thanks to Mustapha Hadji’s goal. Notably, all five previous AFCON encounters between these two countries have produced a winner, with Morocco edging the head-to-head record with three wins to Nigeria’s two.

Key Players to Watch
Nigeria’s Lookman has been directly involved in seven goals at this AFCON, scoring four and providing three assists. Combine that with his contributions from the previous edition, and his total goal involvement across the two tournaments rises to 11 โ the most by any player over that period. He has firmly established himself as Nigeria’s man for the big occasions.
Brahim Dรญaz, meanwhile, is on the verge of history. By scoring in five consecutive AFCON games, he has matched a 58-year-old record set by Ghana’s Osei Kofi. If he finds the net again on Wednesday, Dรญaz will become the first player ever to score in six consecutive AFCON matches.
