The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, has honoured the memory of Lt.-Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, describing his death as the highest price paid for national unity.
In a remembrance letter to the Fajuyi family, obtained by Hard tark internation magazion on Friday, the Aguiyi-Ironsis called July 29, 2026 a solemn day to celebrate a soldier whose sacrifice still inspires Nigerians.
The letter was signed by Amb. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, former Minister of Defence and son of the late Head of State.
“Lt.-Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi was a war hero who offered himself as a sacrificial lamb for the unity and integrity of Nigeria,” the family wrote. “His courage, loyalty and selflessness remain virtues every Nigerian should emulate. His sacrifice is one of the most defining moments in our history.”
The family recalled that Fajuyi was Military Governor of the Western Region when mutinous soldiers launched the July 1966 counter-coup. He was abducted alongside Aguiyi-Ironsi in Ibadan.
According to them, Fajuyi had a chance to save himself but refused to abandon his guest and superior officer.
“In a defining moment of conscience, he chose honour over safety. He refused to leave his guest and superior in danger. That decision reflected the highest ideals of loyalty, integrity and military brotherhood,” the letter stated.
The Aguiyi-Ironsi family described Fajuyi as a national martyr whose legacy promotes unity, courage and selfless service. They also condoled with his descendants, praying for strength and peace for the family.
“We remain deeply grateful for his life and sacrifice. We appreciate Nigerians and institutions that continue to honour his memory. It shows that a patriot’s sacrifice is never forgotten,” they said.
They urged the government and military authorities to keep preserving Fajuyi’s legacy and to support his family.
“He did not run. He did not hide. He chose to stand. In that decision lies his greatness. His legacy challenges all Nigerians to uphold unity, courage, honour and selfless service,” the family added.
Lt.-Col. Fajuyi was killed alongside Maj.-Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi on July 29, 1966, during the military counter-coup in Ibadan.
