The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has officially ended his working relationship with his longtime personal counsel, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and barred him from acting for him, his family, or IPOB in any capacity.
In a letter dated July 22, 2026 and sent from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu said he had earlier ended Ejioforโs appointment verbally, and that the new letter served as formal written confirmation.
He also revoked any authority previously given to Ejiofor to speak or act for IPOB, stating that the lawyer no longer holds express, implied, or apparent authority to represent the group.
Referencing Section II, Subsection A of the IPOB Code of Conduct, Kanu said only the IPOB leader has the power to appoint, suspend, or dismiss principal officers unless such power is expressly delegated.
He added that no individual, committee, or former official acting outside that code can validly hire or retain lawyers for the organization. Based on this, he declared that any claim by Ejiofor to represent IPOB is no longer valid.
Kanu directed Ejiofor to immediately stop making public comments, granting interviews, issuing press statements, or posting on social media on behalf of himself, his family, or IPOB.
He further instructed the lawyer to cease presenting himself as his counsel or that of IPOB in any court or public forum, and to take steps to withdraw from all pending cases where he is listed as counsel.
On confidentiality, Kanu warned:
โI hereby place you on formal notice that you are not authorized to disclose, publish, communicate, exploit, or otherwise use any confidential or privileged information acquired during your retainer, except as required by law or by order of a competent court, without my express written authorization.โ
He cautioned that any unauthorized disclosure could amount to professional misconduct and could lead to disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, LPDC, as well as other legal consequences.
