It’s been a busy summer for Super Eagles players, with several Nigerian internationals moving to new clubs across Europe ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

The latest high-profile switch saw Taiwo Awoniyi leave Nottingham Forest for Coventry City. The striker completed a reported £17m move, ending a four-year stay at the City Ground.

Awoniyi is part of a wave of Nigerian players seeking fresh starts in England, Germany, Italy, Turkey and other leagues this window.

Here’s a rundown of Super Eagles stars who have changed clubs this summer:

Kelechi Iheanacho
The forward departed Scottish champions Celtic after helping them win the Premiership and Scottish Cup. Though he initially signed a 1-year deal with an option, Celtic decided not to extend. Iheanacho has now signed for Turkish club Bursaspor.

Taiwo Awoniyi
After four seasons with Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi has joined newly-promoted Coventry City on a permanent deal. His time at Forest was up and down, but he was respected in the dressing room. The move should give him more game time as Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, return to the Premier League.

Akor Adams
Adams is headed to Italy after sealing a permanent transfer from Sevilla to Venezia. The club announced the deal on July 22, with the striker signing until June 2030. Adams joined Sevilla in January 2025 and finished with 10 goals and 4 assists in 37 games before making the switch to Serie A.

Raphael Onyedika
The midfielder ended his stint at Belgian side Club Brugge, where he became a key player. Linked with teams in Turkey, England and Saudi Arabia, Onyedika chose to move to Germany instead, joining Eintracht Frankfurt. He’ll hope to make his mark in the Bundesliga, following in the footsteps of Nigerian legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha who also played for Frankfurt.

Gift Orban
It was a tough loan spell for Orban at Hellas Verona in Italy, with reports of disciplinary issues including a clash with a supporter. The Hoffenheim-owned forward has now moved to Turkey on loan, joining newly-promoted Super Lig side Amedspor as he looks to get his career back on track.

Frank Onyeka
Onyeka’s loan move to Coventry City has been made permanent after the club’s promotion. The Brentford midfielder was key during their promotion push. His loan deal reportedly included a clause that triggered a permanent transfer if Coventry reached the Premier League.

Chidozie Awaziem
Veteran defender Awaziem has returned to Turkey, signing for Konyaspor from French side Nantes. It’s his second stint in the Turkish league after a previous loan at Caykur Rizespor in 2019.

Leon Balogun
The 38-year-old former Super Eagles defender has also switched clubs. Balogun left Aris Limassol in Cyprus and signed for Hungarian team ETO Gyor, where he will bring experience in the later stages of his career.

With the new season approaching, many of these players will be hoping regular football at their new clubs boosts their chances of staying in the Super Eagles setup.
