Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has not given up on convincing Francis Onyeka to play for Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively report.
The 19-year-old midfielder was born in Germany to Nigerian parents and has represented Germany at youth level. He is yet to earn a senior cap, which leaves him eligible to switch.
Currently on loan at newly promoted Bundesliga side SV Elversberg, Onyeka is said to be Chelle’s top target for the playmaker position in the national team.
The teenager made headlines over the weekend after coming off the bench to net twice in the German Cup. His goals helped Elversberg to a 3-1 win over MSV Duisburg, and he was named Man of the Match.
According to a source close to the coach, Chelle has been trying to reach Onyeka directly but hasn’t been successful.
“Chelle views him as the perfect fit for the playmaker role of the Super Eagles. The only thing holding back talks with his camp is getting his contact or that of his representative,” the source said.
With Nigeria looking to bolster its creative options, securing a commitment from the Elversberg youngster remains a key objective for Chelle and his technical crew.
