Nigeria recorded a sharp decline in the daily use of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel in July, according to new figures from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA.
The regulatorโs July Fact Sheet, released on Monday, shows Nigerians cut back on consumption across the board as pump prices continued to rise.
Daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, fell by 25% to 37.6 million litres per day in July, down from 47.4 million litres per day in June.
Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, also known as diesel, dropped 9% to 14.7 million litres per day from 16.0 million litres per day.
Aviation Turbine Kerosene, ATK, saw the steepest fall, declining 41% to 1.7 million litres per day from 2.9 million litres per day.
NMDPRA linked the drop to higher prices. In July, petrol sold between N1,131 and N1,350 per litre, diesel went for N1,440 to N1,670 per litre, while ATK ranged from N1,750 to N2,650 per litre.
The only product that bucked the trend was Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG. Daily cooking gas consumption rose by 7% to 4.1 kilotonnes per day, up from 3.8 kilotonnes per day in June.
The data highlights how rising energy costs are forcing households and businesses to adjust usage, even as demand for cooking gas continues to grow.
