Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has lauded Taiwo Awoniyi for his immediate influence in the Sky Blues’ 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night.
The second-round fixture saw Coventry take control early at Home Park. Nigeria striker Awoniyi opened the scoring in the 5th minute, finishing off a brilliant through ball from Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.
Just two minutes later, Awoniyi turned provider, setting up Jack Rudoni to double Coventry’s lead.
Speaking after the win, Lampard highlighted the forward’s contribution despite still building match fitness.
“He gets his goal and an assist, and yeah, he’ll be getting fit at this point, but I thought we saw the qualities that we brought him here for,” the Coventry boss said.
Awoniyi’s goal and assist helped seal progression for Coventry as they look to build momentum in both cup and league competitions this season.
