The Anambra State Police Command has responded to a report published by SaharaReporters based on a letter from the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC.
The letter, signed by RULAAC Executive Director Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma and dated September 5, 2026, alleged that Ms. Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer was arrested on August 31, 2026, not for any offence of her own, but in connection with her brother, Nwosu Kenechukwu. The report also claimed that โฆ600,000 was demanded for her release.
In a statement, the Command said it is important to correct the narrative.
According to police, Nwosu Kenechukwu is a person of interest in an ongoing probe into multiple cult-related killings in Awka. Investigators found that Ms. Jennifer was aware of efforts to arrest her brother and allegedly helped him avoid capture.
The Command stated that her arrest was part of a lawful investigation into her alleged role in obstructing police work, and not simply because of her family ties to the suspect.
The police also strongly denied the claim that any money was requested for her release.
“At no point did the Police demand or collect โฆ600,000, or any other payment, as a condition for her release,” the statement read.
Ms. Jennifer was later granted bail in line with standard procedure. This followed her agreement to cooperate with detectives and assist in locating her brother, who is still being sought in connection with the cult killings.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to due process, rule of law, and respect for human rights. It noted however that this does not prevent police from taking lawful action against anyone reasonably suspected of helping a suspect evade arrest or interfering with an investigation.
The police urged media outlets, civil society organizations, and the public to confirm sensitive allegations with relevant authorities before publication. The Command said unverified reports can mislead the public, damage trust in law enforcement, and jeopardize ongoing investigations.
The Anambra State Police Command added that it remains focused on unraveling the cult-related murders under investigation, identifying all persons linked to them, and ensuring those culpable face justice
