A mother in Imo State has gone viral after presenting her son with a live goat during his departmentโs sign-out ceremony at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
Chinyere Okoro gifted the animal to her final-year son, Promise Okoro, in a moment that drew loud cheers and applause from students. The video of the presentation quickly spread online.
Speaking with BBC News Pidgin on Monday, Chinyere said the gesture was to reward her son for his good conduct and academic success.
โI donโt have money for a 4matic jeep, but I love that boy. I said let me buy a goat for him,โ she said.
According to her, she had warned Promise against cultism when he left for school and told him she would give him a surprise if he finished without disappointing her.
โHe obeyed me. He didnโt join cult, he didnโt drop out, and he made me proud. Heโs respectful to the family and everyone. He also plays football, and I wanted to show him my love. Thatโs why I got the goat.โ
Chinyere said she bought the goat for N120,000, but was ready to spend more.
โI paid N120,000 for the goat. Even if it was N200,000, I would still have tried to get it for him,โ she added.
โAs I was walking in, the students were shouting. I was happy, and I know my son was happy too.โ
Reacting to the surprise, Promise said he thought something else was happening at first.
โOne of my coursemates called me. People were shouting โsay yes,โ so I thought it was an engagement. I wasnโt even sure it was my mum until I saw her with the goat,โ he said.
โI came out emotional and happy. I wasnโt ashamed. Why would I be ashamed of my mum? Iโm not ashamed in school, so why would I be ashamed of her?โ
The video has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians praising Chinyere for celebrating her sonโs milestone in a unique and heartfelt way.
