AWKA — The Anambra State Police Command has explained that its ongoing impounding of vehicles with tinted glasses, unregistered cars, and vehicles with concealed or defaced number plates is part of a broader security operation, not an attempt to harass motorists.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command said the enforcement covers vehicles with tinted windows whether or not the owners have permits.

According to the police, the exercise is aimed at verifying the authenticity of tinted glass permits, detecting forged or fraudulently obtained documents, and ensuring compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations.

“The operation is also designed to prevent criminal elements from exploiting these violations to conceal their identities and evade law enforcement,” Ikenga stated.

The Command acknowledged that the exercise may cause inconvenience to law-abiding residents but said it had become necessary due to prevailing security challenges and the increasing use of tinted and unregistered vehicles by criminals.

Ikenga appealed to Ndi Anambra for understanding and cooperation, assuring that the operation is being carried out in the interest of public safety, protection of lives and property across the state.

He reiterated that the police are committed to due process and that the goal is to enhance security, not to cause unnecessary hardship.
