Madrid, 2026 – Bernardo Silva has signed for Real Madrid after his Manchester City contract expired this summer. The 31-year-old midfielder has agreed a two-year deal at the LaLiga club and joins Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella as one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings since returning as head coach.

Silva’s exit ends a trophy-laden nine-year spell at City that began when he joined from Monaco in 2017. The Portugal captain made 460 appearances and scored 76 goals for the club, playing a central role in six Premier League titles and one Champions League among 16 major trophies. He captained City in his final season, featuring in all 38 Premier League games as they finished second and lifted the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid both made offers, but Silva chose Real Madrid. He is expected to feature for Portugal at the World Cup in their Group K opener against DR Congo on Wednesday.

Mourinho’s experience-first rebuild
Real Madrid have moved quickly in the transfer market. Cucurella arrived from Chelsea for £47.5m plus £4.3m in add-ons, potentially rising to £51.8m. The 27-year-old made 163 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Brighton for £63m in 2022, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup. He turned down interest from Barcelona, Atlético and Manchester City to join Real.

The club have also agreed deals for free agents Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool and Denzel Dumfries from Inter for £17m, with announcements expected soon. Antonio Rüdiger’s contract has been extended as well.

The signings mark a clear shift in strategy. Real have focused on proven, experienced players rather than young prospects. Silva, 31, Cucurella, 27, Dumfries, 30, and Konate, 27, contrast sharply with last summer’s arrivals – Dean Huijsen, Álvaro Carreras, Franco Mastantuono and Trent Alexander-Arnold – whose average age was just over 21. This window’s average is close to 29.

Cucurella is the first player over 25 signed for a fee above £2m since Eden Hazard in 2019. Since then, Real’s experienced additions have come on free transfers, including Rüdiger, David Alaba, Kylian Mbappé and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Mourinho has always favoured tried-and-tested players, and with Real having gone two seasons without LaLiga or Champions League silverware, experience is the priority. President Florentino Pérez promised a “mega-signing” during his re-election campaign, but none of the four deals so far fit that description. More business is expected before the window closes.

Cucurella’s move is unrelated to any potential transfer for Enzo Fernández, who said in April he would be open to living in Madrid.
