The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, has applauded the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists for launching the Women in Security, WINSEC, Summit and Awards 2026.

Mrs. Disu described the initiative as timely, saying it will spotlight the contributions of women to national security and encourage more service to the country.

She made the remarks on July 28, 2026 when she hosted a NAWOJ delegation led by National Chairperson, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, at the POWA National Headquarters in Abuja.

The visit was to formally invite the POWA President to the first edition of the WINSEC Summit and Awards slated for Wednesday, August 5, 2026, and to seek POWA’s partnership for the event.

Responding, Mrs. Disu thanked NAWOJ for the honour and the planned award. She said the recognition would spur her to do more for police families and for programs that advance women.

“I sincerely appreciate this recognition. We are just starting, and by the grace of God, I hope to do even more,” she stated.

Comrade Ibrahim said WINSEC was created to celebrate the courage, professionalism and sacrifices of women in Nigeria’s security and law enforcement agencies. She added that the summit will also create room for dialogue on security challenges and the role of women in peacebuilding.

According to her, the event will bring together security agencies, policymakers, government officials, development partners, CSOs, traditional rulers, the media and other stakeholders to discuss security, leadership and national development.

She noted that beyond honoring serving female personnel, the summit aims to inspire young girls to take up careers in security by showcasing women who have excelled despite challenges.

“Women have unique strengths in peacebuilding, conflict prevention and community engagement. Their increased involvement in security institutions is key to tackling Nigeria’s current security issues,” she said.

Comrade Ibrahim appealed to POWA for institutional collaboration, mobilisation and goodwill to ensure the success of the maiden summit. She explained that award recipients emerged through a nationwide nomination process conducted by NAWOJ State Councils, with nominees recognized for outstanding service to security and national development.

She added that the summit will also honor Nigerians whose efforts have improved community safety, security infrastructure and the welfare of security personnel.

Both POWA and NAWOJ expressed optimism about building a stronger partnership to promote women’s welfare, national security and greater female participation in peace and security governance.
